whY safe beauty?
My mom was my hero. She was a stunning model who could bake a pie like no other and was a beauty and anti-aging product fanatic.
I lost her to ovarian cancer when I was just 21 years old, and that became one of the most transformative moments in my life.
Losing her when she was so young and full of life left me shell-shocked. I started researching and found that an enormous amount of cancer cases are not hereditary, but due to the environment- aka avoidable.
Fast forward a few years, one day I had an epiphany - since skin is my body’s largest organ, whatever I was putting ON my skin was affecting my body as much as what I was putting IN it.
Immediately I started reading the labels on the back of my products and threw away the toxic ones and switched to safer products. Along with coconut oil, I started using organic, paraben-free or natural products. I felt so much better about what I was putting on my body, but I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the great performance of the chemical-laden products I used before.
BUT WAS IT ENOUGH?
Over time I learned that the United States has not passed legislation regarding the safety of personal care products since 1938.* In fact, there are over 80,000 chemicals on the market today with no safety data and many of them are in our products.* That meant that the products I thought were safe, were maybe not safe after all because no one was regulating the ingredients that were was used in them. Some of these ingredients are known to cause cancer or be hormone-disruptors. I also learned that the European Union bans over 1,400 chemicals that can be used in personal care products while the United States bans only 30.
That's when a few people entered my life and told me about a wonderful company called Beautycounter. Beautycounter is a B-Corporation (a company that is certified to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency) whose mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. They produce phenomenal products that are safe AND high performing, educate the public on the need for safe products and advocate on a governmental level for improved regulations in the beauty and personal care product industry.
Beautycounter’s “Never List” contains 1,500 chemicals that they promise will never be used in their products, which include the 1,400 chemicals banned in the European Union, PLUS additional chemicals that they screen and test that could potentially be of concern. I’m a huge fan of Beautycounter’s products and their mission to change the lack of federal regulation in the U.S., so I became a consultant and started educating the people around me about the need to consider what they are putting on our bodies. I had to be a part of the movement to bring change.
